| Crabby Patty or is it Pattie... | ||
|
That's what some called me after my last few postings... Let me clear this up... The 8-5 gig is the royal PITA... My customers are great! I love them all! However, the timing on some of that stuff has been less than ideal, haha. Which, don't get me wrong, being busy and making some money is a good thing, and I do appreciate every penny, haha. It's funny because Bill and I were talking about how we were bored and no business back in January when we wanted to work, but nothing was happening, now when we got stuff to do, everyone wants us now. It's cool, and by all means, my customers are not part of what "needs fixing". That is on the 8-5 side, the side that pays the mortgage... This too shall pass! If anyone has a good cure for making my eyelid stop twitching from the stress, lemme know, the 440 ounce rum and cokes and goofballs aren't cutting it. Maybe it is the start of Glaucoma and I can get some "good" medicine for it, wink-wink... I think ya need to live in California to qualify for that... Bill and I are getting close to finishing one site and hopefully I can make that link public soon... We're waiting on some more info from the customer before we can wrap it up. Nothing fancy, pretty much a presentation site showcasing their products. Bill did a really nice job on the graphics package for it! Looks awesome! Made some updates to the Great Northern Beer Festival site last week too. They have decided to partner with eTix and sell their tickets online! Now you can order your tickets and print them online. There is a $2.50 fee, but what the hell, the convenience of getting them purchased and printed right away is cool! I cannot wait for the beer fest! That is going to be sooooo much fun!!! BP South is now working for BadgerTech as a salesman... I am going to have to put him on the payroll for commissions. Just another person with a finger in my pie, haha!! Thanks BP!! |

| Crap, I had to do it... | ||

I wasn't gonna do any geek speakin tonight, but I gotta do this quickie!! Totally forgot about the new Release of Ubuntu today!! Feisty Fawn, version 7.04 was released. Of course their network is slow and updates are pretty hard to get, the rush should subside in a few days. You know us nerds when something cool gets released, we either camp out in lines for 3 weeks to get a game console or we have to download it right away and be the first to proclaim installation superiority. I belong in the later group, and tonight, I can't get my updates... If you're still tied to Winblows, my condolences. Gutsy Gibbon is the code name for the next Ubuntu release. |

| Spring is a comin! | ||
|
Supposed to be in the mid 70's this weekend and the weather guesser on the local Podunk News channel teased us a little bit by mentioning the 80's. Hmmm, time to uncover the AC, which, thanks to a decent tax return is now paid off. Better at least get it uncovered! Most of the posts of late have been real nerdy in nature, so I will avoid that topic today, haha. You're welcome! How about work? Is that a good topic? Sure, if you wanna get my emmer effen blood boilin! The 8-5 gig is just one gigantic stressball that has me wondering if I am coming or going. The side business of hosting and building web sites has been about the same. While those headaches suck, it is a different kind of headache and, tolerable for the most part. Where were all the customer headaches when the 8-5 wasn't a royal PITA? I need to fix these things. One way or the other, something has to change, somewhere, soon. Mike will be starting up Little League play again on Monday. His coach just called and informed us about the details of the first practice. Mike is pretty excited about that! Michelle, Sam, and Jake have been taking nightly walks. I think Sam and Jake are taking tonight off, but Michelle is out and about in the big metropolis of Crandon. I am chilling out in the office right now applying some computer updates and listing to some Rage Against the Machine. Probably should be listening to classical music so that the wild beast can settle down a little bit. But I refuse to do any customer work tonight. I am gonna go watch some Discovery or TLC channel and veg out with a 440 ounce Rum and Coke! Funny... As I get ready to close out for the night I was thinking... Back in November I was writing on here all the time when I was all stressed over Michelle's health. Now, I am all stressed and I hate the friggin thing... Go figure... I did put some camera phone pics over on the moblog a ways back, but forgot to mention it. BP South found them. Until some other day... |

I can now say that there are no longer any NTFS or FAT32 partitions on BIG-ASS-DOG! That does not mean I still don't have an opportunity to run Winblows XP, but now it is done through VMWare Workstation for Linux. I settled on Ubuntu 6.10 Edgy and so far, I am very happy with my decision to do so! Maybe someday I will get more into all the gory and geeked out details, but most of the posts these days have been rather nerdy, so, I will spare you, haha. Last thing I need to do is get the network printer configured, but I have done that once before when I was dual booting, so no big deal. I saw this today and thought it was pretty cool! The European rate of Firefox use is at 25%!! OUTSTANDING!! Now if we could just turn Americans onto it! I keep track of these stats at work and 11% of the visitors there use Firefox. I will have to check, but I think that fell a couple points after Internet Exploder 7 from Micro$hat was released. If you know our demographics, then you know why most use IE. I've used IE7 at work checking how stuff looks, and it actually seems like a decent browser, but come on, you KNOW it is full of ready to exploit holes!! We have less than 1% Linux usage by our visitors. Probably me!! Bummer about that crazy shooting spree that moron in Virginia went on today. Sadness... What is more sad still... In 20 years time, we'll most likely look back on today's incident as small potatoes on the carnage scale. I am most certain that before I die, some SOB will shoot up some school and kill many many more than what was killed today. |

| Past couple of days... | ||
|
Have been spent rebuilding my main computer, BIG-ASS-DOG, and getting rid of the primary XP install. My base install is now Ubuntu Edgy 6.10. Wow, what a difference! Had some issues with the RAID-1 setup, but worked past them, was a good learning experience. So much so, I will probably rebuild again on Saturday, just for fun. I currently have RAID setup the hard way, via partitioning the two 80 GIG drives the same and setting up software RAID via Ubuntu. I would much rather have it run from the motherboard controller and not be tied to software as this may make changing distro's a PITA later. I kind of short changed myself on the boot partition and created a little bit too big of a swap partition, and I want to right that wrong. During this time the memory upgrade of the laptop, BIG-ASS-LAP-DOG, came in. Wow, what a difference! AM dual booting XP and Ubuntu on there and will probably nuke XP and go with some distro of Linux. Really want to play more with openSUSE or maybe even load up Fedora Core 6 on there. I might even go with a super lightweight install of Xubuntu and then run VM's on top... Xubuntu only needs 128 to 256 megs of RAM to run, I think I can get away with running VMWare Workstation on that... We'll see... Enough nerd babble... I do have to figure out what I am going to do for a webcam now since the software for that cam ran under Winblows... Sorry Sooz, you might have to settle for me sending you a camera phone pic on occasion, haha. I should start a geek speak page... Sheeeeeit.... I can't post on my other bloggin domains as it is! All I need is another page to maintain! |

| Happy Easter | ||
|
Hope you all had a good Easter weekend. Mine was spent working on a new customers website, details to come later, suffice it to say, it will be a real sharp looking site when done... The kids computer nuked a hard drive a month or so ago, so I put a new one in it... While preparing for the swap, I found the most likely cause for the failure. Heat. Darn thing was packed full of dust! I know, I know, you gotta clean out those dust bunnies on occasion, Easter weekend seemed appropriate to do that, haha. Sammi was thankful that I was able to plug in the old hard drive as a slave and grab her iTunes folder off of there. She has been lost without being able to download the tunes from her iPod to her laptop. I am sure that somewhere in the stoopid Mac world, there is a way to import your iPod onto a new machine, but I wasn't gonna mess with that. I don't touch Mac crap. Mike will be happy to know that I was able to grab his Firefox profile folder and restore all his flash game website bookmarks. The old drive stays up and running for about half an hour, then starts clicking and clanking and locks up tight. Needs new ceramic bearings, wonder if BP has some... I spent a good chunk of the weekend getting my main desktop ready for a rebuild... I've actually been working on backing up stuff on the primary machine for a week now. I need one of those 500 gig external drives, next on the wish list, when I can get some more business, haha. Since upgrading the amount of RAM in my primary machine to 3 gigs, I have decided to load a base install of Windows XP Home (I have a license for that) and then run virtual machines. Rather than dual, triple, or even quad boot and have all these partitions setup I have decided it would be easier to run those virtually. If you've never seen it, it is way coolio! Instead of Michelle and I having separate logins, we'll have separate virtual machines. I can snapshot them at anytime and create an instant backup. I can run the same virtual machine on my laptop, hardware is NOT an issue, and I just ordered 2 gigs of RAM for the laptop. I have a base Windows XP Pro virtual machine that runs on 2.5 gigs of RAM leaving 500 megs of RAM for the host XP machine, more than enough. Nice thing is... I can create the VM with minimal disk space, like 20 gigs, then I can access the host machine's hard drives through mapped drives. Here is the cool thing about that... You may be saying, well, that sucks, you can only get your files at 100 megabits or even gigabit if you have the proper equipment.... Not true! That type of networking, between the virtual machine and the host machine never goes out into the physical world, i.e., cable and router, unless you make it do that, which would be stupid. Instead, it uses a virtual network and all traffic stays on the hosts pc's BUS. Therefore, you can achieve much faster throughput. Gigabits, not megabits. I did some timed tests between two physical drives in my computer and between a virtual machine and the host machine. The times were nearly identical. I think it is time for the Easter nerd to get away from the office and have a few more beers! |

| Friday Funny | ||

Time for a Friday Funny, many thanks to Judi!! How about that!! I get better mileage than the Yota!! However, I know damn well I don't walk 900 miles per year. I also think I probably consume more beer than the average American. So, what follows is the special Paulie factored mileage.

| Keep an eye on the cam... | ||

We're under a Winter Storm Warning... Weather guessers are saying 4-8 inches. Off to work, see ya later! Edit... Running out of daylight now. If I can remember, I will fire up the cam before I head to work tomorrow. Off to make some eats and drink some beerz and tackle the rest of the crap sitting on my plate tonight... |

Keep a tight one... (Thanks Jimmy)
